"Nest" Team Challenge
This year one of my goals is to enter at least 6 of the monthly challenges from the Etsy Beadweavers Team. Here is my entry for this month: Honeycomb Bracelet
The theme for the Etsy Beadweavers January Challenge is "Nest". Here is a description:
You can read more about the challenge here on the Etsy Beadweavers Blog.
When I was a child I spent a lot of time at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, which has tons of great, hands-on learning activities. One of the permanent displays in the museum at that time was a bee hive inside a cylinder of glass. One end of the cylinder was open to the outside of the building so the bees could come and go. It was fascinating to watch the bees fly in and out of the hive and move around the honey comb. If you touched the glass in an area where the bees were thickly clustered, it felt warm and cozy. I wanted to capture this feeling in my challenge piece.
I set out to make open hexagon shapes in warm, golden colors. The first problem I ran into was that the beads tend to pull into a circle on the hexes on the edge of the bracelet, though I do get nice straight hexagon sides where they border each other.
After a little experimentation, I discovered I could give the edge hexagons a better shape if I added an extra bead at the corners.
So I made a golden honeycomb bracelet. Now I just needed to choose a clasp. I went down to the fabric store and found some cute honey bee buttons. The only problem was that they just didn't quite go with the colors in by bracelet. This was very sad for me because I really did a good job attaching that bee.
So I made a new bracelet in yellow, white and black colors. I used black drop-shaped beads in the corners. I think this is a much better match.
Now I just need to decide what to do with my first bracelet. I'm thinking about folding it into a three dimensional shape and using it as a pendant (after I take the bee off). What do you think?
The theme for the Etsy Beadweavers January Challenge is "Nest". Here is a description:
“It
will still be winter in the Northern hemisphere in February and I
believe thinking about nestling could make us feel comfortable. What I
would like us to do: If you think about (or google for) "nest", you will
find much more than birds building nests. Insects like bees, hornets
and others also do.
So let´s get
inspired by their pieces of art. Let´s see what ideas nature gives us.
I´m sure, everybody will find a way to find their own interpretation of
NEST……My intention is NOT building whatever nest in beads. When you
think about what associations we have with the term "nest", it´s not
necessary to construct a complete copy of a natural item.
For me
structures are important. You cut out a certain detail and transform it
into beaded art, the main thing is that everybody will have the
association NEST!"
You can read more about the challenge here on the Etsy Beadweavers Blog.

Voting for the Picasso Challenge
A few weeks ago, I posted about my progress on my entry in the Etsy Beadweavers Picasso Challenge. At the time, I was not quite finished. I was worried about what kind of clasp I would put on the bracelet. As it turns out, a box clasp worked quite well. I was able to finish the Dance of Veils and enter the Challenge.
The entries in this Challenge are amazing! I would really like to encourage you to stop by and see for yourself. You can vote for your favorite on the Etsy Beadweavers Blog. Please stop by and participate - anyone can vote!

Picasso Challenge
I've decided to participate in the Etsy Beadweavers Team October Challenge "Inspired by Picasso". I started out by doing a Google search for Picasso images. When I found one I liked, I threw that image into the search bar to find more like it (up to that time, I hadn't realized it was possible to search and image that way). The painting I chose to inspire my beadwork piece is Dance of the Veils, from Picasso's African period.
I like this painting because of the sense of motion Picasso was able to convey with geometric shapes. I especially liked the curving triangles with the heavy black outlines and the cross-hatching. I decided that this outlined, curved triangle was the shape I wanted to feature in my beadwork piece.
I made my first attempts during my recent camping trip. After I came home, I continued to work on it. It took me many tries to get the shape to look the way I wanted it to.
Finally I managed to make some curving triangles that had just a little bit of curl (I like the 3-D curl, attempt 4 just had a bit too much curl). I sewed my new triangles together into a bracelet.
Now I need to attach a clasp that won't detract from the bracelet. I like the clean lines that the triangles make. I don't want to attach the clasp to the tips of the triangles because I think that will obscure their pointiness (is that a word?). I will probably attach the clasp to the long side of the two ending triangles.
So if you were going to do a Picasso-inspired project, which painting or period would you choose? Or would you want to choose a different artist all together?

Attempt 1: Not technically feasible
Attempt 2: Too suggestive
Attempt 3: Too Rounded
Attempt 4: Too curly

2 Treasuries in 1 Day
Back in November I made a collection of Christmas ornaments for the Holiday Treasures Challenge. I made beaded candy canes and wreaths and snowflakes and listed them all together as a single entry in my store.
On after thought, I decided that the snowflakes were a different color scheme and should really be a separate collection.
Friday night, I removed the snowflakes from the original collection and listed them by themselves.
When I got on line Saturday morning I discovered the snowflakes had been chosen for 2 difference treasuries. This put me in a good mood all day :)

The two treasuries are:
"Linen and Ice", and
"Ice Cold".
Please stop by to look and leave a comment - these are both lovely collections!

Simon and Garfunkel Challenge
These earrings are my entry in the Etsy Beadweavers Challenge "Simon and Garfunkel - The Songs of Inspiration". I initially felt really challenged by this theme... but then I remembered what I love most about Simon and Garfunkel songs - the vivid descriptions of the lyrics and music.

One of the things I've always found compelling about their music is the way they could set a scene in my mind with only a few words and measures of music.

The song I chose is Patterns. I was especially inspired by the first verse.
The night sets softly
With the hush of falling leaves
Casting shivering shadows
On the houses through the trees
And the light from a street lamp
Paints a pattern on my wall
Like the pieces of a puzzle
Or a child's uneven scrawl
In these earrings, I used black and white to try to capture the starkness of the song. I love the phrase "shivering shadows". I wanted the patterns on the earrings to move, so I made two layers that can swing independently. I tried to give the patterns in the earrings a random look (though I did not really pick up the beads randomly). I was thinking of the shadows that might be cast by leafless trees in winter.
The last picture is my favorite because the earring looks fractured. My youngest son (7 yrs old) set that photo up :)
Please visit our team blog, (http://www.etsy-beadweavers.blogspot.com) between the 9th and 15th and vote for your favorite entry. You will see some wonderful works of art!
